Australian paraplegic yachtsman, Vinny Lauwers, was the deserved winner in the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability category. World renowned yachtsman and World Sports Academy member, Sir Peter Blake and French football star David Ginola, awarded Vinny with his Laureus Statuette.
"I think I might leave while the going’s good. Thanks for that. You know, over the seven and a half months while I was sailing around the world I had a lot of time to think, as you can imagine, but never once in my wildest dreams did I ever think that my achievements, my vision would come to such a sporting award. And from the bottom of my heart, I thank Laureus so much. This really is for me the icing on the cake. It’s the greatest honour in sporting for me, ever. I’ll forever cherish it.
Last, and most importantly, I want to thank my beautiful wife, Jackie, who’s sitting over here. Jackie did say that she wanted me to wait until I made it back home before she’d marry me, I’m sure you can understand why, but I’m probably the luckiest man in this room because she said I’m allowed one mistress, and she’s 48 foot long, 15 foot wide and has all the right curves.
