15 years of Laureus: The anniversary of a very special speech

At the very first Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony in Monaco on May 25, 2000, Laureus Patron Nelson Mandela said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair.”
These words gave birth to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Over the years the Foundation’s work has helped young people overcome challenging social issues including poverty, homelessness, war, juvenile violence, drug abuse, discrimination and AIDS.
The Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony has also created a unique place for itself in the sporting calendar, celebrating the most remarkable and inspiring sportspeople from around the world.
The Foundation now supports over 150 projects worldwide. Since its inception, Laureus has raised €60 million for projects that have helped to improve the lives of millions of young people.
