Maier's career was almost ended following a motorcycle accident and narrowly avoided a leg being amputated. Despite missing the 2002 Olympic Winter Games because of reconstructive surgery, Maier fought back to ski again. He returned to international competition in January 2003 and just two weeks later took first place in the Super G event in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
