Under their outstanding captain Ricky Ponting, Australia were the dominant cricket team in 2007, winning a third consecutive World Cup in Barbados in April. They were unbeaten through the tournament. They had the best batsman for the tournament in Matthew Hayden, who scored 659 runs at an average of 73.
They had the man of the match in the final in wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist who scored 149 against Sri Lanka. Bowler Glenn McGrath was also named Man of the Series. During the year they also beat England 5-0 in the first Ashes series whitewash since 1920/21, they beat India 4-2 in a One Day International series and Sri Lanka 2-0 in a full Test series.
