In another excellent year, Serena Williams, at 33, won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles to take her career Grand Slam total to 21, just one behind Steffi Graf and three behind Margaret Court. Her victory at Wimbledon in July meant that she held all four Grand Slam titles at the same time, only the fifth player to achieve this.
In October she overtook Chris Evert in the list for most weeks as world No.1. She held the No.1 ranking for the entire year and, at 274 weeks, she is now behind only Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova. She was voted WTA Player of the Year for the seventh time.
