Brazil’s dreams of a first Olympic football gold medal became reality thanks to Neymar’s winning kick in the decisive penalty shootout, after the final against Germany in the Maracana Stadium had ended 1-1. The impressive Neymar had also scored Brazil’s goal in normal time. Brazil had lost in the finals in 1984, 1988 and 2012. The result went some way to reduce the pain of the 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat inflicted on Brazil by Germany in 2014.
