Nelson Mandella

25 Years of Laureus

Washington quarterback Alex Smith suffered a broken leg in November 2018 that led to serious infection and threatened his life. He needed 17 operations. Even though he was 34 and nearing the end of his career when he got hurt, he courageously fought back and made his return to the Washington team in November for a game at the Detroit Lions. It was 728 days since he had started an NFL game and he set a career-high of 390 passing yards.
