Under Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman, and captained by Leah Williamson, England Women won the European Championship, their first major international success, beating Germany 2-1 in the final. There was a record crowd present for a European Championship final of 87,192, beating the 79,115 set in the men’s final in 1964. England striker Beth Mead with six goals and five assists in six matches won the Golden Boot and was also named Player of the Tournament.
