Aged 29, he was signed by Borussia Dortmund for €31 million from Ajax to replace Erling Haaland, who had left to play for Manchester City. But weeks after arriving, the Ivory Coast striker was diagnosed with testicular cancer. After six months treatment he was able to return to the team. He scored an eight-minute hat-trick in a 6-0 friendly against Basel and two weeks later scored a goal against Freiburg, fittingly, on World Cancer Day. In the rest of the 2022/23 season he scored nine goals in 22 games for Borussia.
