Ian Thorpe came out of the Sydney Olympics as the most successful individual athlete with three gold and two silver medals. It is testament to his form going into the Games that this was considered something of a disappointment for some fans, but Thorpe's reputation at a home Olympics was undoubtedly enhanced.
