Winner of two Grand Slam tennis events during the qualifying year, Federer won seven titles in 2003, more than any other ATP player. The unquestioned highlight was his win at Wimbledon when he was in magnificent form throughout the tournament eventually beating Mark Philippoussis in the final.
In addition to Wimbledon, he won in Houston, Marseille, Dubai, Munich, Halle and Vienna. Federer, who also had more match wins (78) in 2003 than any other player, finished the year as World No 2 and was voted ATP European Player of the Year. He began 2004 in explosive form, becoming World No 1 during the Australian Open, and eventually winning his second Grand Slam beating Marat Safin in the Melbourne final.
