The queen of the swimming pool Inge de Bruijn came up with the perfect answer to those who were hinting that at 29 she might be over the hill when she won two gold medals in great style in the World Championships in Barcelona.
The triple Olympic gold medallist from Sydney cleared out the field to win gold in 24.47secs in the 50m freestyle – just off her championship record from 2001 – and then beat eight-times Olympic champion Jenny Thompson to win a second gold in the 50m butterfly. De Bruijn has twice been nominated, in 2001 and 2002, for the Laureus World Sports Awards.
