FC Porto won the Champions League in 2004, beating Monaco 3-0 with goals from Carlos Alberto, Deco and Alenitchev, and defeating Real Madrid and Manchester United on their way to the final.
The Champions League triumph completed a period of enormous success for the club under manager Jose Mourinho which included UEFA Cup victory in 2003 and the Portuguese championship for the seventh time in ten years. During the domestic season, FC Porto won 25 times and lost only twice, both matches away from home.
Six FC Porto players were selected for the Portugal squad which reached the final of the 2004 European Championship - Deco, Nuno Valente, Paulo Ferreira, Maniche, Costinha and Ricardo Carvalho.
