In April 2007 Lorena Ochoa overtook Annika Sorenstam to become the leading women’s golfer in the world. Only the second Mexican to become a member of the LPGA Tour, she won eight tournaments during the year and in August won her first major championship at the home of golf, the Old Course St Andrews, where she won the Women’s British Open by four shots having led from start to finish.
In a remarkable spell she then won the next two LPGA events, the CN Canadian Women’s Open and the Safeway Classic. She also became the first woman ever to earn more than $4,000,000 in a single season, surpassing Annika Sorenstam's previous record of $2,863,904.
