Jessica Ennis followed in the steps of the great Carolina Kluft by adding the 2010 European Championship heptathlon title to her World Championship gold medal of 2009, setting a new championship record of 6,823 points – the highest score in the world in 2010.
The European Championship was virtually a world championship, as it missed only Hyleas Fountain from the world's best competitors. Kluft, now retired from the event to concentrate on the long jump, said that she expected Ennis to pass her European heptathlon record points total of 7,032 points at some point in the future. Ennis also won the pentathlon gold at the World Indoor Championship in Doha with a championship record of 4,937 pts, beating all three Beijing Olympic heptathlon medal winners, Nataliya Dobrynska, Hyleas Fountain and Tatyana Chernova.
During the year she was voted European Athlete of the Month three times - in January, March and May - and was runner-up to Blanka Vlasic as European Athlete of the Year.
