Led by head coach Jill Ellis, the United States won the FIFA Women’s World Cup for a record third time, beating Japan 5-2 in the final. Striker Carli Lloyd scored three goals in 16 minutes – the first time a player has scored three in the Women’s World Cup Final. Her unique achievement resulted in her being awarded the Golden Ball as best player and the Silver Boot for scoring six goals. Hope Solo won the Golden Glove as best goalkeeper. It was fitting revenge for the United States after losing to Japan in a penalty shootout in the final of the 2011 Women’s World Cup.
