Germany’s Angelique Kerber had an outstanding year which culminated in her displacing Serena Williams as world No.1, becoming the oldest player, at 28, to achieve the ranking for the first time. During the year she won two Grand Slam titles: the Australian Open, where she beat Williams in the final, and the US Open. Her year could have been even better, but she lost in the final at Wimbledon to Williams. She also won the Olympic silver medal in Rio de Janeiro, was runner-up in the WTA Finals and won the Stuttgart Open.
