Won three gold medals from three events in Tokyo to become Britain’s most successful Paralympic athlete. Her career total of 17 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals makes her the front-runner by both gold medals won and total medals won. In Tokyo she first defended her title in the women’s individual track pursuit C5, then won the women’s time trial C5, and finally rounded off an amazing performance in the women’s road race C4-5 to overtake the previous record of 16 gold medals. Born without a functioning left hand, now 43, she has the distinction of winning five Paralympic gold medals before she was 19, when she competed as a swimmer. She has competed in eight Paralympic Games.
