Olympic 1,500 metres champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen was a hot favourite to add a World Championship gold medal at the distance in Eugene, but he was beaten by Jake Wightman in one of the biggest athletics surprises of the year. However he came back within five days to win at 5,000m, overwhelming a strong field that included world record holder Joshua Cheptegei. Later in the year he also won a European 1,500m and 5,000m double and secured the Diamond League 1,500m title.
