‘Sport has the power to change the world’ – Nelson Mandela, 2000 Laureus World Sports Awards

The 21-year-old won the 200 metres in Paris, and in doing so, delivered a first-ever Olympic gold medal won by an athlete from Botswana. Among those he beat in the final was American Noah Lyles, who was favourite to complete the sprint double having won the men’s 100m title days earlier. His victory led to a holiday being declared in Botswana to celebrate his feat and in October 2024 his achievement was honoured when he received the Association of National Olympic Committees award for best male athlete in Paris – where he also won silver in the 4x400m relay – before being named male Athlete of the Year by World Athletics.
