629 days on from a life-threatening car crash, the wicket-keeper batter completed his sensational return to play for the India Test team. After the collision in December 2022 in which he received widespread injuries and needed reconstructive surgery on a knee, there was no certainty he would ever be able to take to the field again. However, in his comeback Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, he equalled M.S. Dhoni for most centuries made as an India wicket keeper and at the end of November surpassed Virat Kohli to become the highest paid Indian cricketer when he was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for the 2025 Indian Premier League campaign.
