Last year, wheelchair tennis player Esther Vergeer virtually swept the board in her discipline, clinching singles titles in the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters, the Italian Open, the Citta di Livorno, the Swiss Open, the French Open, the British Open, the Belgian Open, the Dutch Open and the Lakeshore Foundation World Challenge.
She also tasted doubles success in the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters, the Italian Open, the Swiss Open, the British Open, the Belgian Open and the Dutch Open. She was voted the 2001 Disabled Athlete of the Year in the Netherlands and also the 2001 Player of the Year by her wheelchair tennis peers.
