Underwent a dramatic transformation from the “nearly girl” of athletics to win virtually everything she entered in record-breaking style. Won the London Marathon at her first attempt before shattering the world marathon record in Chicago by 89 seconds. Also won 10,000m title at the European championships in Munich and was named IAAF female athlete of the year for 2002.
