After a mountain biking accident in 2001 which left her in a coma for six weeks and hemiplegic, Canada’s Shelley Gautier became the first female tricycle T1 rider on the international scene in 2009. Since then she has dominated her sport and won all UCI Para-Cycling World Championships over the past five years, most recently winning the T1 Time Trials and Road Race world titles in South Carolina in September. Before her accident her goal was to go the Olympic Games as a physiotherapist, but in fact she ended up going to the 2012 Paralympic Games as a competitor. Now she is working towards the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games.
