Iceland had their greatest ever football success in 2016, beating the once powerful England team 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship. It was an unprecedented success for a nation of 330,000 – eight per cent of whom were in France to watch the tournament. The result was so extraordinary that England manager Roy Hodgson immediately resigned. One of Iceland’s joint coaches Heimir Hallgrimsson is also a dentist. Iceland ended the year 21st in the world rankings, a dramatic rise from 131st in 2012.
