Out with an elbow injury since July 2017, Djokovic returned in January before needing further surgery. Back in action in March, he went on to win his fourth Wimbledon, his first Grand Slam victory since the French Open in 2016, and followed it with the US Open. His success in the Cincinnati Masters meant he became the first player to win all nine Masters 1,000 tournaments.

A Laureus Award is what every athlete wants to win, and this one is a huge honour for me. Being among so many sporting greats here tonight, and hearing about the inspirational work Laureus is doing around the world, gives this Award a special meaning for me. Last year was an incredible season for me, returning from injury to win Wimbledon and the US Open is something I’ll remember forever.
